Stop imessages from showing when imessage is closed

Ok so I use iMessage between my iPhone and Mac. Everything works great for the most part. The most annoying "feature" I can not seem to turn off is to stop iMessages from showing up when I have quit the app. It gets to the point I have to make sure all networking is turned off to make sure when I am presenting on an overhead projector the popup is not displayed. Is there any way to stop iMessage notifications when the app is closed?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

System Prefernces---> Notifications--->

Do Not Disturb---> Check "When mirroring to TVs and projectors

OR

Messages---> Message alert style "None"

In notification center I do not see an option for "Do Not Disturb". I turned off banner notifications and will see if this helps.

My apologies. I don't know how I got into Mt Lion's forum. But hopefully the fix will work.

Just for your information. Marvericks has the Do Not Disturb and what I said above has that option.

Wierd. I see the following at the top of the screen.

Apple Support Communities > Mac OS & System Software > OS X Mountain Lion > Discussions

there must be a bug. I have the option to not display notifications when connected to an external screen enabled. Yet, I still see notifications
